What do you need for a dog show? Checklist (Kennel Edition)

Whether you are a seasoned vet or a first time attendee this list is everything you need to attend a dog show.

  • Water, Food & Bowls - If you are just going to a local dog show I would only bring small amounts of food, monitor intake of food and water to prevent accidents at the show. If you forget a bowl there typically is a vendor selling some.
  • Business Cards - The main reason kennels attend dog shows is to build connections and find future partners. Your business card is crucial in utilizing these relationships.
  • Banner & Canopy - Banners and canopies are used to provide shade and support marketing of your brand. Also if you are hanging up your banner with zip ties be sure to bring scissors or a knife to cut it down when the show ends. Bring steaks or weighted bags to secure your canopy at outside venues.
  • Crates - You need a crate to hold your dog while you are in the ring with another dog or busy conversing with a potential client.
  • Food (Cooler) - Food at dogs shows can get quite expensive. If you are trying to attend a dog show on a budget bring your own food. Most outside shows allow coolers, some inside shows do not allow you to bring in your own cooler.
  • Chairs - Inside shows will typically provide chairs but they are hard and get extremely uncomfortable since on average dog shows last over 6 hours.
  • Toys & Treats - Your dog will get bored and start to get mischievous, bringing their favorite toy or treat will keep them entertained for the duration of the show.
  • Phone Charger - You will be using your phone a lot to take videos of potential studs and building business relationships. Make sure you have a full charge when you arrive.
  • Jacket - Outside shows can change in a matter of minutes with the change of the weather, be sure to be prepared and check the weather before attending.
  • Table & Cloth - Most inside venues will provide one table. A table can be used for stacking, eating, and a place to display your brand.

Every dog show is different and each has a whole new set of opportunities and excitement. Preparing properly will ensure you have a good show and keep everyone including the dogs happy.
